The Czarna Hancza

Czarna Hańcza is one of the most important rivers of Suwalszczyzna and the largest river of Wigry National Park. The length of the river is 142 km, including 108 km in Poland, while the remainder is located in Belarus. Surface basin covers 1,916 sq.km.

The river is very popular among tourists, mainly due to its natural appearance. In the mainstream fallen trees often appears  which form a very interesting landscape, while the bottom of the Czarna Hańcza is densely overgrown by aquatic vegetation.

A valley of the Czarna Hańcza river is a place where you can see moose, beavers, deer and wolves. On the banks of the river we can observe otters and even muskrats. There are also a lot of birds for e.g. ducks, swans, herons and a little but really beautiful blue bird called a kingfisher.

Czarna Hańcza - canoeing
This type of activity is selected by a large group of tourists. The most common route of kayaking is called small and large loop, and the trail of the Czarna Hańcza river and the Augustow Channel. Along the riverbank there are many camping sites and you can meet local residents who sell regional products. Trails along the river, are very interesting  because of Karol Wojtyla (a pope Jan Paweł II), who took part in the these routes when he was young.
